This Castle's Brickwork Spells Its Owner's Initials
Above the gateway of a ruined castle in Leicestershire, two letters are set into the wall in a darker brick. They read W, H — the initials of the man who paid for it, laid there in the 1480s, and still there. Most of us read a castle by its shape: towers, gate, moat. Almost nobody reads the surface. A brick wall carries three separate kinds of information, and all three are readable from the pavement, without a permit or a ladder.

Above the gateway of a ruined castle in Leicestershire, two letters are set into the wall in a darker brick. They read W, H. They are the initials of the man who paid for the building, and they have been up there since the fourteen eighties. He was beheaded before it was finished. The letters were already laid.
Most of us read a castle by its shape. Towers, gate, moat, curtain wall. Almost nobody reads the surface. A brick wall carries three separate kinds of information, and every one of them is readable from the ground. No permit. No ladder. By the end of this you will be able to take all three off any old brick building you walk past.
Start with the obvious question. Why brick at all? In fifteenth century England, brick was not the cheap option. It was the fashionable one. At Tattershall, in Lincolnshire, there was good building stone close by, and Lord Cromwell chose brick anyway. About seven hundred thousand of them went into his tower.
Three buildings carry this story. Tattershall in Lincolnshire, raised for Ralph Cromwell around fourteen thirty-four to fourteen forty-seven. Herstmonceux in Sussex, begun in fourteen forty-one for Sir Roger Fiennes. And Kirby Muxloe in Leicestershire, begun in fourteen eighty for William, Lord Hastings. Three counties. Roughly fifty years.

Layer one is the bond. A brick has two ways of showing itself to you. Laid with the long side out, it is a stretcher. Turned end on, so that you see the short face, it is a header. That is the whole vocabulary. Everything from here is an arrangement of those two.
English bond alternates whole courses. One course of stretchers, then one course of headers, all the way up. That is not decoration. A thick wall is two skins with rubble between them, and the header course is what ties the skins together. The pattern is doing structural work.

Now the useful part. Flemish bond alternates stretcher and header inside the same course. The same two bricks, a different rhythm. The earliest whole facade in England set out in correct Flemish bond is at Kew, and it is dated sixteen thirty-one. So the bond puts a wall on one side of a line. That is a date you can read from the pavement.
And this is not a specialist's game. It is how the official listing describes Herstmonceux Castle, in nine words. Red brick in English bond with some blue header diaper work. That sentence is a reading of the wall, and it is public.
Layer two: the overburnt ones 2:59
Layer two is colour. Look along an old brick wall and some of the header ends are darker. Purple, grey, almost slate. Those bricks sat too close to the fire. They came out of the kiln overburnt, with the surface half turned to glass. In an ordinary firing, they are the spoiled ones.
Which is exactly the point. Somebody had to pull them out of the stack, keep them apart, and hand them to the bricklayer in the right order. Overburnt brick is harder to cut and does not lay as sweetly. It is more work, on purpose. The colour is not an accident that happened to the wall. It is a decision somebody paid for.

And here is why those two layers are the same story. In English bond the header ends only appear on every other course. That is a grid. Fixed spacing across, fixed spacing up. A dark header can only go where a header already is. So the pattern is not drawn on the wall. It is a by-product of how the wall stands up.
Layer three: four marks on a gatehouse 4:07
Layer three is what the pattern says. In nineteen seventeen the Office of Works published a survey of Kirby Muxloe, written by the man who had just cleared the site. Four things are on the front of the gatehouse. He lists all four in a single sentence.
Above the gateway, the builder's initials. W, H. William Hastings, Lord Chamberlain to Edward the Fourth, and the man whose building accounts we read in the last episode. He put his name on the front of the building in a second colour of brick, at a size you can read from the far side of the moat.
On the right hand turret, a maunch. That is a heraldic sleeve, and it is the charge on the Hastings arms. So the wall carries the name and the coat of arms, one above the other, in the same material as itself. And above the sleeve, a ship. Nobody has explained the ship.

And on the left hand turret, this. What seems to be the lower half of the figure of a man. That is the entire description. The man who cleared the site, edited the accounts and wrote the guide looked at it, wrote that, and stopped. It has been a hundred and nine years. Nobody has finished the sentence.
One more thing about that survey, and it is a lesson in reading the reader. He never uses the word diaper. In nineteen seventeen he writes that the gatehouse is built of thin red bricks, varied with patterns in black. Diaper is our word, not his. Watch which century is doing the describing.
The journey the accounts paid for 5:46
So where did the idea come from? The building accounts answer that, and they answer it with an expense claim. In June, fourteen eighty-one, Robert Steynforth goes to Tattershall and back. In October the master mason himself, John Cowper, makes the same trip, by order of Lord Hastings.
The reason given in the guide is doubtless in order to take notes of the treatment of the brick and stone masonry there. That is a little over fifty miles in a straight line. And Tattershall was not new. By fourteen eighty-one that tower had been standing for something like thirty-five years.
What they went to see was the largest brick building most of them would ever stand in front of. About seven hundred thousand bricks at Tattershall. Kirby Muxloe would end up taking one point three million. It used more brick than the building it went to study, and it still stopped short.
And Tattershall carries the same kind of writing. A recent survey of the great tower found diaper patterns forming an M and a double V V. It also found a heraldic shield, a Calvary cross, and Marian imagery. Nobody in that survey tells you what the M stands for. The description is the finding.
So what travelled those fifty miles was not only a technique. Two men went to look at a wall, and what came back with them was the idea that a wall is a surface you sign. Forty years later, in another county, for another lord, the same three layers turn up. Bond, dark headers, figures.
Now the limit of all this, because a method that does not know where it stops is not a method. The paper tells you who went, and when, and who ordered it. It does not tell you what the marks mean. A ship. Half a man. An M, and a double V. The building is legible and it is not translated.

There is one more reading here, and it is the uncomfortable one. The brick burning at Kirby was in the charge of one Antony Docheman. The guide reads that name and says so out loud. Clearly a foreigner, a Fleming probably. Later in the roll the same man turns up as Antony Yzebrond.
Now go back to Tattershall. The principal brickmaker there was Baldwin Docheman. The same byname, two counties, forty years apart, and two different men. Docheman is not a surname. It is the clerk writing down the Dutchman, because the trade came out of the Low Countries and the word did the job.
Which leaves two records saying opposite things. The wall spells out the name of the man who paid for it. The paper does not spell out the name of the man who made the brick. Both of them are records. Each one is blind exactly where the other one sees.
Three questions for any brick wall 8:48
So take three questions to the next old brick building you walk past. One. Are the headers in courses of their own, or mixed into every course? That is roughly before or after the sixteen thirties. Two. Are any of the header ends darker? Then somebody meant the wall to be looked at. Three. Do the dark ones make a shape?
Because if they do, that is somebody talking, and you are the first person in a while to listen. Kirby Muxloe still has one figure that nobody has read. Next time, a belief with a birthday. The spiral stair does not turn clockwise to free a right handed swordsman. About a third of the survivors turn the other way, and the story was invented in nineteen oh two.
