The Castle That Contradicts Its Own Building Licence
The king's own licence, from 1385, says Bodiam Castle was built to fight the French. The earthworks around it say it was built to be looked at. Both documents are genuine, and the man who built it had spent five years professionally deciding which walls would stop a French landing. This is why both readings are true, and why the question historians have been arguing since the 1990s is the wrong one.

Two documents, one building 0:00
Two sentences about the same building. The first: this castle was built to stop a French invasion, and we have the king's licence saying so, in writing, in thirteen eighty-five. The second: this castle could not have stopped anybody, and the ground around it proves it was never meant to. Both of those are supported by evidence. Neither of them is a rumour. Both documents are genuine.
That is the problem with Bodiam Castle in East Sussex. It is one of the most photographed buildings in England, a square of grey stone sitting in a sheet of still water, and for the last thirty years it has been the centre of an argument that will not close. The king's own licence says it was built to fight the French. The earthworks around it say it was built to be looked at. This episode is about why both readings are correct, and why the question they are trying to answer is the wrong one.

Start with the reason anybody in Sussex would want a castle at all. In thirteen seventy-seven, French ships came ashore on this coast. They burned the town of Rye. This is not a raid remembered as a footnote by historians; it is remembered by the town, because when the French left, they took the church bells with them, back across the Channel to Normandy. A stolen bell is a very specific kind of humiliation. It is the sound a town makes. It marks the hours, it calls people to church, and it is the alarm that warns them when somebody is coming. Take the bells and you have taken the town's voice, and everyone within earshot knows it.
The following year, the men of Rye and Winchelsea crossed the water themselves. They raided the Norman coast, at Saint Pierre-en-Porte and at Veulettes, and they brought the bells home. Two years after that, in thirteen eighty, the French came back and hit Winchelsea again, and the defence, organised under the Earl of Arundel, did not hold. So the sequence on this coast, in the space of three years, is attack, reprisal, attack. Nobody living there in thirteen eighty-five needed to be persuaded that the threat was real. They had counted it.

Which brings us to the document. In thirteen eighty-five, Sir Edward Dallingridge is granted a licence to crenellate: royal permission to fortify his manor house at Bodiam. The wording is not vague. The castle is to be built, and I am quoting, for defence of the adjacent county and resistance to our enemies. That is the king's chancery, on the patent roll, naming the purpose of the building in the same breath as the enemy. If you wanted a single piece of paper to settle what a castle was for, this is what it would look like. That should settle it.

It does not, and the reason is the water. The moat at Bodiam is enormous in plan: one hundred and fifty-five metres by one hundred and fifteen. It is wider than a football pitch. It is also about two metres deep. That is chest height. Now hold those two numbers together, because they are the whole problem in miniature. The width is spectacle. The depth is a reflecting pool. And the moat sits on sloping ground and is fed by natural springs, which means an attacking force does not need to cross it at all. They need to cut it, downhill, and wait. A moat you can drain is scenery with a drainage problem.
Then there are the gunports. Bodiam has them, which in the thirteen eighties is genuinely early, and that sounds like the argument for the defensive reading. Look at where they are. They are keyhole ports, set at ground level in the gatehouse, and the thickness of the wall they are cut through restricts the field of fire so severely that the arc they cover is very narrow. A gunport is not a weapon. It is a line of sight with a gun at one end of it, and if the line of sight does not cross the ground an attacker has to walk over, the gun is furniture.
And the curtain walls are thin for the job. They stand two storeys, they survive close to their original height, which is remarkable in itself, and they are simply not the mass of masonry you build when you expect somebody to bring engines and sit down in front of you for a season. Compare them with a wall built for war in the same century and the difference is not subtle. This is the case the sceptics have made since the nineteen nineties, and it is a strong one. Drainable moat, badly sited gunports, thin walls. So the sceptics have a case.

Here is what that case needs, and does not have. To read Bodiam as vanity, you need Sir Edward Dallingridge to be a man who did not know what a real fortification looked like. A soldier of fortune come home rich, building himself a stage set, because he could not tell the difference. The record does not allow that, and it does not allow it with dates. On the fifth of July, thirteen eighty, Dallingridge is appointed to survey the defences of New Winchelsea. In April, thirteen eighty-two, and again between January and February, thirteen eighty-five, he is charged with the fortification of Rye. Rye. The town that lost its bells. Look at that last date again, and then look at the licence for Bodiam. Same year. He was, in the same season, professionally deciding which walls would stop a French landing, and then building this. He was not guessing.
So the question sharpens into something much more interesting than fake or real. A man who had spent five years assessing coastal defences for the crown, who had seen what happened at Winchelsea when the defence did not hold, built a castle that does not do the things he knew how to do. Not because he did not know. He knew better than almost anybody in Sussex. He built it that way on purpose. The question is what the purpose was, and the answer is not in the masonry at all. It is in the ground outside it.

In nineteen ninety, a survey team from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England went over the fields around Bodiam. Not the castle. The fields. Earthwork survey is slow, unglamorous work, and what it produces is a plan of every bump and hollow in a landscape, measured. They were looking, among other things, for the outworks you would expect around a defended site. They did not find defence. They found a garden.
What the earthworks describe is a route. You do not arrive at Bodiam from the road and see a castle. You are brought in from the south and the west, along a curving approach carried on causeways, with sheets of water on either side of you, and the castle appearing and disappearing as the path turns. It is a designed sequence, and it has the one property that gives designed sequences away: it is longer than it needs to be. Nobody arrives at Bodiam by accident. You are walked to a point where the building stands up out of its own reflection, and then you are allowed to look at it. You are being shown something.
The water is part of the composition, and not only the moat. The mill pond is drawn into it. The ponds and the causeways and the great still rectangle around the walls read together, from the route, as one arrangement, and the thing they are arranged around is the view. Which resolves the depth problem completely. The moat is not two metres deep because somebody miscalculated. It is two metres deep because that is enough to hold a mirror.
It is worth saying how anybody can tell the difference, because this is the method the whole channel runs on. A defensive ditch and an ornamental lake can look identical from the air, and in profile they are not remotely alike. A defensive ditch is cut to be steep and deep relative to its width, with the spoil thrown up on the inner side to make a bank, so that anything crossing it is climbing while it is exposed. An ornamental sheet of water is wide, shallow, level, and carefully kept level, because a mirror that slopes does not reflect anything. The plan will not tell you which one you are standing beside. The section will.
A caution from the other side 8:30
Now, a caution, and it comes from inside the discipline. In two thousand and seven, the historian Colin Platt published an article in Medieval Archaeology called Revisionism in Castle Studies, and it argued that the revision had gone too far. The pendulum had swung from castles as fortresses to castles as pure display, and Platt's point was that the swing had quietly discarded something true: the threat was real. Nobody on the Sussex coast in thirteen eighty-five was building a garden folly with the French in mind as a decorative theme. The bells really had gone to Normandy.
And that is where the argument has been stuck, with both sides holding real evidence, because the two sides are answering a question that nobody in thirteen eighty-five was asking. We have inherited a split between military architecture and domestic architecture, between a fortress and a house, and we read every medieval building as one or the other. Dallingridge had no such category. A castle was the physical form of a man's standing, and a man's standing on a coast that had been burned twice in eight years included, necessarily, being the sort of man who could hold a position. Looking defensible and being defensible were not opposites. They were the same claim, made in stone, to different audiences.
There is a hard version of this that does not depend on symbolism at all. Assaulting a castle is expensive. It costs a season, it costs men, it costs supply, and a raiding force that has come ashore to burn a town and leave has none of those to spend. A raider does not test whether your moat is drainable. A raider looks at a walled square in the middle of open water, decides it is somebody else's afternoon, and goes somewhere easier. A castle that is never attacked has not failed to be a castle. It has done the entire job, and it has done it without anybody writing down that it happened.

So the building is not lying. The licence is not a cover story and the garden is not a confession. Bodiam is exactly what it appears to be: a statement of standing, on a coast where standing meant being able to hold, put up by a man who had spent five years being paid by the crown to know the difference between a wall that would hold and a wall that would not. We are the ones who arrived seven hundred years later with two boxes and demanded it choose one. It never had to. We asked the wrong question.
Next time, a document that settles its argument rather more bluntly. February, twelve ninety-six. The king's master mason writes to the treasury to explain why Beaumaris is costing what it is costing, and what he produces is a cost overrun, itemised, with the labour force counted and a note about the money running out. Seven hundred and thirty years ago, in writing, signed.

In 1385, Sir Edward Dallingridge received a royal licence to fortify his manor at Bodiam, East Sussex, worded explicitly for defence against French raids that had already burned Rye once. Since the 1990s, castle scholars have split over what the building actually is: the moat is wide but shallow and drainable, the gunports are badly sited, the walls are thin for the period — evidence historian Charles Coulson used to argue Bodiam is a display piece with no serious military purpose.
But a 1990 RCHME earthwork survey found something the sceptics' case doesn't explain: a designed approach route, carried on causeways through ornamental sheets of water, that brings a visitor to the one point where the castle appears mirrored in its own moat. And the man who built it, Dallingridge, was the crown's own coastal-defence commissioner — surveying Winchelsea's defences in 1380, fortifying Rye in 1382 and again in January-February 1385, the same months as the Bodiam licence.
The conclusion isn't that Bodiam is fake or that it's real. It's that in 1385, looking defensible and being defensible were not separate categories — a dichotomy we inherited, not one the fourteenth century used.
